Sunny Leone's first Hindi film 'Jism 2' made the most of the buzz surrounding the adult movie star to register a strong presence at the box office, grossing Rs 21 crore over the weekend.
The film opened for paid previews on Thursday, August 2, and full release on Friday, August 3.
Directed by Pooja Bhatt, the film is said to have cost less than Rs 11 crore to produce and market. Though collections on Saturday were already much lower than those on Friday, the film is being deemed a hit.
Compared to this, 'Jism' which was a remake of Billy Wilder's well known 1944 movie Double Indemnity starring Bipasha Basu and John Abraham made in 2002 had earned only about Rs 13.25 crore.
The Ekta Kapoor-produced '
Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum' had collections of around Rs 6 crore in its second weekend to take its 10 day gross to a little less than Rs 40 crore.
'Cocktail', starred and produced by Saif Ali Khan, has not collected much in the past two weeks, earning less than Rs 74 crore so far.
The weekend collections for Hollywood films have not come in yet.
The only new film released last Friday was 'Total Recall'. Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises' had made Rs 36 crore until the weekend, and is showing more staying power than 'The Amazing Spiderman' (Rs 48 crore) at the multiplexes.
'Ice Age 4' has collected around Rs 8 crore in its first week run at the box office.
All the other releases of week, including the widely released animation film 'Krishna aur Kans' from Reliance Animation and the other lesser known names like 'Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai' and 'Shuttlecock Boys' went unnoticed.
The coming week will see the release of the second part of Anurag Kashyup's crime-drama 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. With the critical acclaim and the positive box office response that the first part received, many are looking forward to the sequel.
As for overall sentiment, the box office is expected to remain muted for the time being. Much is expected, however, from the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif-starrer 'Ek Tha Tiger' - made by Yash Raj Films - which releases on August 15. Khan has delivered a hat-trick of successes over the past three years with hits like Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010) and Bodyguard (2011).
