"Will remove any content that violates our terms": Facebook

In response to the government's bid to screen and eliminate "objectionable'' content from social networking sites and micro-blogging sites , Facebook said that it will engage with the Indian authorities to remove any content that "violates our terms."

What is Facebook's response to Communications Minister Kapil Sibal's comment on Tuesday asking operators of social media networks, including Facebook and Google, to screen and eliminate "objectionable'' content on their sites. The PR agency for Facebook tells BT it will offer  "not a response but a comment on behalf of Facebook on the entire issue'' and requests that BT use the entire comment "as it can be misinterpreted.''

Here is the comment that BT got: "We want Facebook to be a place where people can discuss things freely, while respecting the rights and feelings of others, which is why we have already have policies and on-site features in place that enable people to report abusive content.  We will remove any content that violates our terms, which are designed to keep material that is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity off the service.  We recognize the government's interest in minimizing the amount of abusive content that is available online and will continue to engage with the Indian authorities as they debate this important issue."
