If the
Samsung Ativ Smart PC is a tablet which can become a laptop, the Dell XPS 12 is an Ultrabook that can
transform itself into a tablet.
Like others in the XPS series, this one too has a solid build with a stylish aluminum and carbon finish. The distinctive design feature of the device is the aluminum frame that runs around the screen and the keyboard.
The first one is more than just a frame, as it also holds the axis around which the screen flips to project the screen outwards. Close the device with the screen facing out and you have a tablet, though a slightly bulky one.
Being an Ultrabook with a
third generation Intel Core 15 processor inside, the Dell XPS 12 convertible is upto most productivity tasks that you throw at it. In fact, we suspect that those who buy this device will primarily use this as an Ultrabook, and will flip the screen over only one in a while.
But in case you need to use this one as just a tablet, you would not be disappointed with the 12.5" Full HD WLED screen which is very responsive and crystal clear. After all, this is a Full HD screen, the sort that is still rare on Ultrabooks.
Another major design change is the power switch, which is now at the left edge of the keyboard and is a toggle button. The power button is also nearby.
On the other side are two USB 3.0 ports and mini-display port in case you need to use another monitor. We think there is a strong case to put a HDMI port there too, but now it is too late.
The keyboard is one of the best around and has just the right amount of travel and is also backlit. We were also impressed by the sound, which emanates from two strip-like speakers on both sides.
