Parliament on Thursday approved additional expenditure of Rs 34,724.50 crore for the current fiscal, involving net extra outgo of Rs 9016 crore with the Rajya Sabha returning the first batch of supplementary demand for grants.
Replying to a debate on the related appropriation bill,
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in the Upper House that though containing fiscal deficit was "challenging", the government has to stick to the target.
The fiscal deficit target for the current fiscal is 4.6 per cent of the GDP.
In the wake of slowdown in the economic growth and global uncertainties, there are concerns over the expenditure overshooting the budget in 2011-12.
"(Containing fiscal deficit) It is a really challenging job... difficult job. But we have to do (it)... Fiscal profligacy is not acceptable," the Finance Minister said.
The Lok Sabha has already passed the additional demands for grants.
These grants also involve increased expenditure on the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme.
The Minister said additional expenditure on Anganbari workers was also made additionally on the request of MPs.
