Review: HCL ME U1

Review: HCL ME U1

The latest HCL Me U1 tablet too sports the new Android Ice-Cream Sandwich onboard. But does this seven-incher score over the competition?
HCL ME U1
Price: Rs 7,999
Specs: Android V4.0; 7-inch tablet; front VGA camera; 4GB memory, expandable up to 32GB; Wi-Fi, USB Port, miniUSB port; 350 gm; 3600mAh battery.

HORSEPOWER AND CONNECTIVITY
The HCL Me U1 isn't low on specs as it has a 1Ghz singlecore processor along with 512MB RAM. While it manages to handle the mundane tasks easily, it did freeze a couple of times. Connectivity options include USB port, mini USB and Wi-Fi.

HARDWARE
We were initially happy with the HCL Me U1. But that was before we compared it with the Zync 990 and the Micromax Funbook . With a white plastic body, the build quality of the U1 felt cheap and flimsy. Although it weighs 350 grams, the same as the Funbook, it still feels heavier to hold.

HICCUPS
The biggest drawback of the HCL Me U1 is the lack of Google services like Google Play for downloading applications. To make up for this, the company has allowed access to Me Apps, but that store, we know, doesn't have most of the popular apps that Play has.

PLATFORM
Like its rivals, the U1 also runs Android v4.0. The Google search icon dominates the top left while the main app launcher tray is on the top right. There are three touch keys for home, back and multitasking at the bottom left. The application icons in the launcher look huge.

PORTRAIT OR LANDSCAPE?
The lack of physical keys makes the tablet hard to use. But, the placement of the volume and power keys makes it comfortable to use in portrait as well as landscape mode. However, even with autorotation on, the homescreen can only be used in landscape.

BAG IT OR JUNK IT? Not the best option around.
