Leading low-cost carrier IndiGo on Tuesday announced discount of up to 25 per cent for a family of four or a maximum of nine passengers travelling together on the same flight. The offer, effective immediately, does not have a validity period.

IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh said that the 'family fare' scheme is valid across all 31 domestic destinations where the airline flies. "In order to enhance the overall experience of families travelling together, our first- of- its kind offer is a benefit to such families regardless of the reason they are travelling," he added.

"Fliers who want to partially cancel some of their seats booked under this scheme will be charged a normal cancellation fees and similarly changes in the flights for one or more passengers can be done. All other terms and conditions of carriage remain same for this new fare offering," the airline said in a statement.

"Other carriers are expected to follow suit as many fliers who have not chalked out their plan for the six- week summer holidays ahead are expected to start planning their vacations soon," an airline official said.

Airlines are going out of their way to woo fliers for this holiday season. SpiceJet has announced that it would compensate passengers in case of a flight delay and cancellation due to reasons under the airline's control. National carrier Air India has offered free upgrade of an economy class ticket to the business class on an additional payment of Rs 5,000 for destinations up to 750 km and Rs 7,000 beyond this distance.

Starting this year, leading domestic carriers have been competing on low fares offering tickets at discounted prices on several sectors booked, at least, 90 days before the travel date. Airlines have received an overwhelming response from passengers on a slew of discounted fare offers between January and April.
