'Joker' has a poor weekend, 'Ek Tha Tiger' is all time blockbuster

"Ek Tha Tiger" becomes the first film to cross the distributor share of Rs 100 crore while the collections of "Joker" have been a mere Rs 15 crore so far, according to preliminary estimates.

The Akshay Kumar-starrer "Joker" released last weekend has received a dull response. Its collections have been a mere Rs 15 crore so far, according to preliminary estimates. Nor is it expected to pick up. Directed by Shirish Kunder, it is likely to prove the worst commercial performance of an Akshay Kumar starrer in the last three years.

Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the film is about a village which does not exist in government records. Its residents try to get the attention of the authorities by dressing up as aliens. Unfortunately, the promos of the film did not kindle any curiosity.

Three more films were also released last week, but none of them made much of a mark: "I M 24, "From Sydney With Love" and "Jalpari". The last one, directed by "I am Kalam" director Nila Madhab deals with the vital issue of female foeticide, but it has failed to stir audiences. However, unlike "Joker", they were all small budget films.

Meanwhile "Ek Tha Tiger " continues its triumphant march. Its distributors - who share the total proceeds earned with the exhibitors - have already raked in Rs 100 crore, the first film to have achieved this landmark. Though collections are now slowing down after three weeks, "Ek Tha Tiger" may still cross Rs 300 crore in gross worldwide collections (inclusive of taxes). Its international run is expected to bring in almost $10 million (Rs 55 crore).

Now in its second week, "Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi", a urban multiplex oriented movie, has collected around Rs.9.5 crore so far.

The coming Friday will see the release of Emraan Hashmi's "Raaz 3". The buzz this time is less than during the release of its predecessors in the series, which trade analysts attribute to its indifferent music. The two previous editions had super hit numbers.

The coming weeks will also see big releases such as Ranbir Kapoor's "Barfi",  Madhur Bhandarkar's Kareena Kapoor starrer "Heroine" and "Oh My God!", with Akshay Kumar, making it a September packed with entertainment.

Note: All numbers are net domestic box-office collections. Net is gross box-office collections minus taxes applicable.
