Review: LG LA8600 55-inch Smart TV

Review: LG LA8600 55-inch Smart TV

The picture quality is really good, without or without the 3D. This LED Plus TruMotion 240Hz screen gives solid blacks and shows no ghosts even with fast moving visuals.
LG LA8600
Price: Rs 2,50,000
Specs: 55-inch 3D LED, 1080p, Triple XD Engine, 1.2GB Dual Core CPU, 2GB DDR, 24W, Wi-Fi,  USB, HDMI, NFC, MHL, DLNA, LAN, 54W

Last year, we had ranked the LG LM8600 as the best television above 40 inches. We reached that decision, pegging it above the Samsung Smart TVs, because it had a great 3D quality, which was what you were paying the money for.

This year, LG has trying to retain its spot at the top with the LA8600 range of "Premium CINEMA 3D smart TVs". We tested the 55-inch version of the television and were looking for what the new features. Yes, 3D was still as stellar as last year and we think this remains the best in class even today. The first thing you notice, or don't notice, is LG's now-trademark thin bezel. This gives the screen a free flowing feel as if it was unbounded.

The picture quality is really good, without or without the 3D. This LED Plus TruMotion 240Hz screen gives solid blacks and shows no ghosts even with fast moving visuals. As we said, the 3D is good. It works better with stereoscopic content and the 2D to 3D conversion is mostly adding depth and not throw. The sound quality is really good and you will seldom have to go beyond the halfway mark on the volume. There is virtual surround too, though we could not feel a big change in sound quality here.

Since this is a smart TV, one of the first things you do in the set is connect to a wireless or wired network. This TV can also connect to your TV and PC. The LG Smart World gives access to hundreds of Android apps and the unit has a 1.2GB Dual Core CPU with 2GB DDR to make them run. But whatever you do with the online apps, make sure you have at least a 1Mbps connection otherwise you will just end up as nervous wreck trying to make things work. Remember, this is also your best source of 3D content. Interestingly, a small frame keeps showing live TV as you search for apps.

As the regular remote will struggle to cope with the pressures of a smart TV, LG has packed a 5-node magic remote that works like an air mouse, has a wheel that lets you roll through screens and has shortcut buttons for most common features like Home and 3D. Together with the remote, LG seems to be getting really close to Samsung with its smart features. There are some additional features too, like the pop-up camera in top for making skype calls - there remote has a built in mic.

This is a good choice if you have the money to splurge for a complete entertainment solution for your home.
