Life Of Pi, the latest movie from Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee, garnered an opening collection of Rs 3.5 crore at the box office in India.

The movie, with debutante actor Suraj Sharma from Delhi, released on Friday in 2D and 3D format and opened in the country in four languages - English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Based on Yann Martel's Booker Prize winning novel of the same name, Life Of Pi was captured in the hillside town of Munnar along with the elegance of Pondicherry - all on 3D.

It narrates the tale of a boy who is adrift at sea in a lifeboat with a Royal Bengal tiger, after his family is drowned in a shipwreck. The film, touted as a visual masterpiece, released alongside the much-awaited last instalment of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

Filmmakers Karan Johar and Shekhar Kapur are among the many who can't stop praising Lee's masterpiece.

"Life Of Pi - must watch!! Its message will have multiple interpretations and will be open to post viewing analysis. That's the fun of it," Johar tweeted on Sunday.

The movie also stars critically-acclaimed actors Tabu and Irrfan Khan.

"Watching Life Of Pi second time in two days. Brought my daughter and her friends. Nice to see a full house and lots of kids. Fantastic movie," Kapur tweeted.
