Let's start up by saying that we have been harping about the looks of the new Mercedes C-class ever since we saw it. So not much has changed in the diesel variant apart from the fact that we had the top-of-the-line avant garde variant with us. As a result this C-class comes with high performance headlamps, a panoramic sunroof as well as a new scuff plate at the back. Adding to the bit is the ground clearance, which is tad higher as well. Inside the C-class diesel offers illuminated door sill plates, a sportier looking front seat, a two-zone climate control system as well as the Garmin sat nav system which beams through a large LCD panel.
Under the hood lurks a 2.2-litre, diesel which churns out 169bhp and 400Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 7G-Tronic autobox which can be operated via paddleshifters as well.
Start up the motor and the noise rather surprisingly does creep into the cabin. While it is not viby or irritating, the car does reveal its fuel identity well. However, what makes this car special is the Agility Select system which offers five modes. While driving in Eco and Comfort mode, the gears shift at lower revs seamlessly and within no time one is cruising at three digit speeds without much hassle.
There is ample low end torque which helps matters too. The steering feels light and it is a best way to get home after a long day at work. The ride too is slightly inclined towards the softer side and as a result the Mercedes C-class keeps its passengers happy.
However, if it is the weekend and you are on a bit of a high spirit, pluck the shifter to Sport+. The steering becomes sharper and the revs hold on till high revs before shifting. This gives the driver that sporty feel which is enjoyable.
The paddle shifters make things better but it does take a little more time to downshift than we expected. In all a 0-100 kmph time of 7.4 seconds and a fuel economy of 19.27kmpl makes it an interesting package.
There is little to doubt that the Mercedes-Benz C-class is a superbly good looking sedan. The diesel in this top trim looks even smarter and is loaded to the gills. The motor is a smooth operator, offers ample grunt lower down and this makes it easy to drive.
The Agility Select adds the fun quotient to the C-class, which finished it off well.
