Microsoft has made a leap of faith and announced the availability of its Office software for the iPhone.
Office Mobile for iPhone will be available in the US Apple App Store from Friday, while other markets will get the same in the coming weeks.
The app will
let users view and edit Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents of their Apple phones.
To activate the Office app users will need to log in with their Microsoft account details. It will be free for Office 365 subscribers.
Office 365 was launched with a commitment to making the service available across devices and screens. By opening up access on the iPhone, Microsoft has plugged one of the biggest gaps in its system.
Earlier this week, Apple had shown how Office documents can now easily be opened in its
ecosystem using iWork on iCloud.
Details on how to use Office Mobile for iPhone is available on
the Office blog.
