In a move that signals the return to a low-cost voice regime, Reliance Communications (RCom) slashed its outgoing calls by a whopping 55 per cent under ' One India One Rate Plans' on Monday. This does away with roaming charges. Under the new plan, customers will pay the same rate for local, STD and roaming calls from anywhere in the country.
RCom prepaid users, comprising more than 92 per cent of its subscriber base, can avail the plan through a monthly pack of Rs 45 and will get all outgoing calls at 40 paise per minute. Currently, RCom prepaid users pay anywhere between 90 paise and Rs 1.20 per minute.
On the post- paid front, RCom has tried to woo high net worth and corporate subscribers by offering them two plans of Rs 350 and Rs 599. Subscribers opting for the Rs 599 plan will get 1,200 minutes of free minutes besides 2GB of data usage.
RCom chief executive officer (consumer business) Gurdeep Singh said, "The launch of the One India, One Rate Plans will abolish differentiated tariffs for roaming, STD and local calls in India. These plans will help the company to attract customers in the high- value corporate and regular roaming users."In order to offset the ever- rising input costs, RCom in April hiked headline tariff by seven per cent- from 1.5 paise a second to 1.6 paise a second- while rates on discounted plans in call rates for prepaid customers was hiked by 20 per cent.
After RCom's announcement on Monday, Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited, which provides telecom services under the MTS brand, also announced a similar tariff cut under "Offer Ka Sikander." Subscribers taking up this offer will get full talk time on all recharges starting at Rs 30 and 10 per cent extra talk time on recharges of Rs 150 and above for a period of one year.
