Rohan Murty, son of Infosys co-founder and re-appointed executive chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy , will be joining the company as an executive assistant to his father.

The company statement on Saturday said that if appointed, Rohan's term as executive assistant to the chairman would be co-terminus with that of Narayana Murthy.

Like his father, Rohan has also requested that he should also be paid only a token compensation of Re 1 per year.

Infosys said in a statement that Narayana Murthy has requested the board to permit him to put together a team to allow him to function more effectively.

The team will include his son, Rohan, as Narayana Murthy's executive assistant.

Rohan is a junior fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University.

He has a Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Cornell University. He has held fellowships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Caltech, and Microsoft Research.

During the press meet on Saturday, Narayana Murthy defended the appointment of his son, saying he will have no leadership role and his only job is to make him more effective.

"I have been away from executive responsibilities for the last seven years. Therefore, I am not as much in touch with the youth of Infosys. Second, post my retirement period, I set apart time for doing things that I enjoyed most with youngsters. I enjoyed working with them. Therefore, when I was requested by the Board to come back, I realised that the quickest and best way of me being effective and to add value to the company is by utilizing the competencies of a small team of people that I have been interacting with in the last two-three years. One of them happens to be my son Rohan," he said.

Two years after he retired from the company, N. R. Narayana Murthy returned to lead Infosys that is grappling with weak earnings and falling market share.

The global software group said in a statement that incumbent K. V. Kamath will step down as chairman of the board and be an independent director. S. D. Shibulal will continue as the chief executive and managing director of the company.
