Coalgate: SC issues notice to Centre on alleged irregularities

The court gives the government eight weeks to respond to the notice that comes in response to a PIL, demanding cancellation of coal blocks allotted by the UPA government.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Centre on alleged irregularities in coal block allocations.

The apex court action comes in response to a PIL filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma demanding cancellation of coal blocks allotted by the UPA government.

The Supreme Court has given the government eight weeks to respond to the notice.

'Coal production unlikely to go up soon'

On Thursday, the Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) on coal blocks allocation had recommended de-allocation of four mines allotted to private firms and encashment of bank guarantee of three others on the ground of non-development of mines within a prescribed time.

It could be mentioned that various opposition parties, including the BJP, have been demanding de-allocation of coal blocks given away by the UPA government on preferential basis. Their demand was based on a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report which has pointed out massive irregularities in coal block allocation leading to the loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer.
