2G scam: CBI questions former Aircel owner Sivasankaran

Allegedly under pressure, former Aircel owner Sivasankaran sold his company to Malaysian entrepreneur T Anandakrishnan, who is reportedly close to senior DMK leaders.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday questioned former promoter of Aircel, C Sivasankaran, in connection with the alleged irregularities in the issue of 2G licenses to the company in 2007.

The development could spell trouble for Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran , who has been accused of corruption by the Opposition.

Sivasankaran owned Aircel when Maran served as communications and information minister in 2006. His requests for mobile network licences were repeatedly rejected.

Allegedly under pressure, Sivasankaran sold his company to Malaysian entrepreneur T Anandakrishnan, who is reportedly close to senior DMK leaders, including Maran and his brother, Kalanithi, who also heads Sun TV Network.

Later, Anandakrishnan was granted 14 licences and within months of that his company invested nearly Rs 600 crore in Sun TV .
