Box office report: Student of the Year has a decent first weekend despite mixed reviews

Student of the Year, Karan Johar's latest directorial venture, continues to do safe business on the box office, brushing aside the mixed reviews of critics.

Student of the Year, Karan Johar's latest directorial venture, continues to do safe business on the box office, brushing aside the mixed reviews of critics. The movie has grossed about Rs 25.25 crore over the first weekend.

Produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment, the movie stars newcomers Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in the lead roles with Rishi Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor and Farida Jalal in supporting roles.

The story revolves around Abhimanyu Singh (Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Dhawan), who traverse the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St. Teresa's High School, Dehradun. Abhimanyu comes from a middle-class family and wants to achieve great heights of success and prosperity; the first step to which will be the Student of the Year trophy. Rohan Nanda is the son of a business tycoon and knows that winning the Student Of the Year trophy will bag him the approval from his father that he subconsciously craves for.

When Abhi and Rohan's rivalry takes an unexpected turn to friendship, neither pre-empts the complications that would brew. Things are further knotted up when Shanaya Singhania (Bhatt), the most popular girl on the campus enters the equation.

As new ambitions are born and old loyalties fall by the wayside, each segment of the Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both, the participants and the spectators, to redefine the choices of the three protagonists.

Released on October 19 in over 1,400 screens across the country, Student of the Year started well with 50 per cent opening collections. The movie fared better in multiplexes than in single screen theatres.

It collected about Rs 7.50 crore on the first day, Rs 8.50 crore net on Saturday and around Rs 9.25 crore on Sunday.

The latest movie from Johar camp showed decent growth over the weekend. Region-wise, Student of the Year has done fair business all over. While Berar and Rajasthan belts have performed exceptionally well, the movie failed to draw in big numbers in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore theatres.
