Intel Ivy Bridge based Toshiba U840 is an ultrabook for masses

At first sight the Toshiba Satellite U840 looks a bit on the heavier side. But then this is an Ultrabook for the masses.
At first sight the Toshiba Satellite U840 looks a bit on the heavier side. And it is a bit heavy when you consider it with Ultrabooks like the Toshiba Protege Z830. But then this is an Ultrabook for the masses.

Toshiba Satellite U840
Price:
Rs 53,500
Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium; 14-inch LCD; Intel Core i5-3317U; 4GB RAM; Intel HD Graphics 3000; LAN, USB 3.0, SD card reader, Wi-Fi; 19.9mm thick; 1.59 kg.

DESIGN
With an Ultra Silver etched aluminium body that gives it a real sophisticated look, the U840 stands 19.9mm tall with a weight of 1.59 kg. There are slimmer Ultrabooks out there, but this is not a fatso in any sense.

The backlit keypad is good, but we would have liked a bit more travel in the keys. The only other button around is for power. The keypad is also of the same material as the rest of the body, though a slightly different colour. And it is hard to miss the fact that there is lot of room here.

USABILITY
The 14-inch screen is good and works well even with Full HD. Like in other units featuring Intel's 3rd generation iCore processor, this one too has great sound quality with SRS Premium Sound 3D. A large screen size also means there are more ports on this Ultrabook-three USB ports, one HDMI and a LAN to be precise.

PERFORMANCE
The Intel Core i5-3317U CPU is as fast as you would expect with a 3rd generation chipset. The start-up took 22 seconds and wake from sleep was three seconds flat, again no surprises here. Since fast start-up is not all that easy with a hard-disc drive, Toshiba has used hybrid drive technology integrating a 32GB SSD with the 500GB HDD.

However, you cannot access the SSD storage. Toshiba has also added some software enhancements like ReelTime, a timeline based slide through dock to access your files in one touch. There is also the PinBoard which lets you tweak settings and also add/remove gadgets and access tools.

It also acts like virtual pinboard so that you do not forget stuff. And, yes, there is wireless file transfer and host of security features that come bundled with the Intel system. If you are looking for a Ultrabook that ticks most of the boxes without burning a hole in your pocket, the Satellite U840 is definitely worth a look.

BAG IT OR JUNK IT? Good affordable Ultrabook, not so thin though.
