Asus flexes innnovation muscle, plans tablet-cum-ultrabook series

A slew of innovative products were launched by Asus at Computex 2012. Leading the salvo is Taichi, a laptop-tablet convertible with IPS displays.

In its bid to push the technology envelope, Taiwan-based IT major Asus has launched a slew of innovative products at Computex 2012. Leading the salvo is Taichi, a laptop-tablet Windows 8 convertible with two IPS displays.

The ultraportable device features unique double-sided LED-backlit IPS/FHD dual display panels; one that works like a conventional laptop screen plus another capacitive touchscreen on the outside of the laptop's lid.

The second display doubles up as a multitouch tablet - and also offers with stylus support.

The Intel's third generation i3/i5 processor based Taichi will be available in 11.6- and 13.3-inch screen size models and will be as thin as the Asus Zenbook, say company sources.

Vying for the limelight also comes the Asus Transformer AiO, a dual-boot all-in-one PC that offers a Windows 8 as well as Android operating systems.

Snap the screen off the Windows PC base station and the 18.4-inch panel metamorphoses into an Android-based tablet in a jiffy. Exact hardware specifications of the world's largest existing tablet and its base are yet to released by the company.

Another interesting launch is the Asus Tablet 810. This Windows 8 device features the next generation Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM with a 64GB eMMC for user storage. The 11.6 inch display with 1366 x 768 resolution uses Super IPS+ technology, while its 10-point multi-touch is complemented by Wacom's digitizer stylus support.

The Asus Tablet 600 (Windows RT) meanwhile, utilises the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 12-core GPU for a mobile graphics performance. It also has 2GB RAM and a 32GB eMMC for user storage. The 600's 10.1 inch display with 1366 x 768 resolution features Super IPS+ technology.
