Lumia design language to run across Nokia devices

Calling the Lumia design iconic, Nikki Barton, Vice-President of Nokia's Smart Devices UX Design, says the "unified design language" will now run across Nokia's device portfolio.

The Lumia range of phones from Nokia is strikingly different from most of the other smartphones available in the market, both in form factor and the use of bright colours. Now, the company is looking at taking this popular design language across its product range.

Nikki Barton, Vice-President of Nokia's Smart Devices UX Design, says Lumia has had a strong design progression since the launch of the N9 in late 2011.

"The Lumia range, however, blends the best of our industrial design with the modern interface of the Windows Phone 8," explained Barton, during an interaction following the India launch of the Nokia Lumia 520 and 720.

Calling the Lumia design iconic, she said the "unified design language" will now run across Nokia's device portfolio. "The design will be reconisably Nokia... But that does not mean we will be stagnant. We will continue to look at different material and screen sizes."

Barton, who has two decades of experience on a wide range of technology platforms and has worked on the design interface for Macromedia and Apple, says Nokia will have a range of design choices for the customer as well.

So, while the Lumia 720 is a slim 9mm design, the Lumia 920 has a thicker, heavier body that appeals to a different set of people.

"It is all about striking the right balance between design and features," she says.
