
International technology trade shows have been for long platforms for big announcements. After Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress, now players like Samsung and Sony are gearing up to announce their next big launches at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) 2014 from September 5 to 10. Here is what you can expect from this event:
Samsung Galaxy Note 4: Samsung had launched its first phablet, Note, at IFA Berlin in 2001. Since then every year the company has been introducing a successor to the Note. Samsung isn't hiding anything. On September 3, Samsung is hosting an event, Unpacked 2014 Episode 2, where the it will announce its latest in the Note series. The Note 4 is likely to have a 5.7-inch QHD display, quadcore Snapdragon 805 processor and 4Gb of RAM. There are rumours that the smartphone will be equipped with a 16MP camera.
Samsung Gear S: Samsung has been focusing on wearable gadgets too. At IFA Berlin, the company make official Gear S , a smartwatch with a curved OLED display and a built-in 3G modem, which can let the gadget receive notifications and messages. It can even make and receive calls without any smartphone involved.
Sony Xperia Z3: Sony is expected to announce its next flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z3. This phone is expected to feature a 5.2-inch screen with 1920x1080p resolution. The Trilumnos IPS LCD display will have 424ppi. The phone is likely to have a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz with a Adreno 330 GPU, 3Gb of RAM, 16Gb of internal memory, a 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera. As its predecessor, even this one is IP58 water and dust resistance. Other devices expected to be launched include Xperia Z3 Compact, the budget Xperia E3 and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Sony SmartWatch 3: In a teaser video, along with the Z3 Tablet Compact, the Sony SmartWatch 3 also got official. The Sony SmartWatch will feature a 1.68-inch display with a 320x320 pixel resolution. It is water-resistant and will run Android Wear instead of the regular Android with Sony's customisation. There are talks about the SmartBand Talk too. It will feature a curved e-ink display and Bluetooth.
Asus Zen Watch: Giving competition to Motorola 360, Samsung Gear S and Sony SmartWatch, Asus is planning to unveil a budget wearable that will be powered by Android Wear. The company has released a teaser video showing the ZenWatch but no details have been revealed yet. It is expected to be sub-$200 smartwatch.
Nokia Lumia 730: Owned by Microsoft, Nokia too is looking at announcing a few smartphones in the coming week. The company has scheduled a press conference for September 4, a day before the event kicks off officially. The rumour mill suggest that Nokia will announce Lumia 830 along with the Lumia 730. The latter is expected to be a mid-range smartphone with 4.7-inch display and a 5MP front camera. The phone is likely to have a new design too. The Lumia 830 will be a high-end Windows smartphone with 4.5-inch display and a 20.1MP PureView camera.
