Samsung Group says Galaxy S III sales hit 20 million

Samsung Group says Galaxy S III sales hit 20 million

Samsung says brisk sales of the S III are helping it retain dominance in the smartphone market ever since its launch in May 2012.

Samsung Group on Thursday said global Galaxy S3 sales breached the 20 million mark in just 100 days after its debut in May 2012.

The company launched the flagship smartphone powered by Google's Android operating system in Europe in late May. The release schedule was about three months ahead of new phone announcement by rivals Apple, Nokia and Motorola.

The record-breaking sales were three times faster than Galaxy S2 and six times quicker than Galaxy S.

Samsung says brisk sales of the S III are helping it retain dominance in the smartphone market . Strategy Analytics says Samsung overtook Apple in worldwide smartphone shipments in 2011.

The company is embroiled in legal tussles with Apple around the world over whether Samsung's mobile devices copied Apple products. Apple last week added the S III to the "copycat" list in its complaint filed with a US court.

The Galaxy S3 sales exceeded the 10 million mark in 50 days since its debut, equaling 200,000 sales per day, Samsung said.

"The GALAXY S3 has enjoyed tremendous attention and popularity since its launch in May, and we are thrilled with its success," said Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung's IT & mobile communications division.
