Spice announces India's first Firefox phone at Rs 2,299

Initially, the device will be available at Snapdeal but after a few weeks it will also be sold in other online and offline stores.

Spice Retail Limited on Friday launched the country's first Firefox OS-powered smartphone, Spice Fire One Mi-FX 1. The device will be sold at a price of Rs 2,299 from August 29. The company said it was targeting feature phone users who want to move to a cheap smartphone. Initially, the device will be available at Snapdeal but after a few weeks it will also be sold in other online and offline stores.

"With the ultra-low cost Spice Fire One, we at Spice aim to convert the feature phone users into smartphone users," said Prashant Bindal, CEO of Spice Mobility.

While Spice is the first company to come out with its Firefox OS phone, there are more in India who will soon join it. For example, Intex is expected to announce its Firefox phone on August 25.

The Spice Fire One is powered by a 1GHz processor, possibly with single core. It has a 3.5-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, a 2-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front camera. The phone doesn't support 3G connectivity. But support for Wi-Fi and EGDE (2G) is provided. The phone supports dual-SIM connectivity.

The Firefox OS is created by Mozilla, the same company that is behind the Firefox browser. It has a marketplace from where users will be able to download apps but the quality and quantity of apps is an unknown factor at the moment. Spice said its phone would come preloaded with apps for Twitter and Facebook. This device also supports several Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil and Bangla.

Dr Li Gong, president of Mozilla Corporation, said, "Just one year after the first Firefox OS device launched, Firefox OS smartphone is now available in 17 countries across Europe, Asia and Latin America. Our partnership with Spice will be an exciting Firefox OS launch in India."
