You may soon be able to use WhatsApp on desktop

Recent report by AndroidWorld suggests that famous instant messaging service WhatsApp might be secretly working on a web version of the app. The web version may make it possible to use the service on computers as well.

The report followed Pavel Durov's revelations about strings in the code of WhatsApp that suggest of a web version. Paul Durov is co-founder of a rival messaging app Telegram.

A recent WhatsApp update (v2.11.471) has mentions of 'WhatsApp Web' within its code. Further, the code mentions references to logging in/out of computers as well as tracking user statuses online. The report also reveals that the code has no mention of Facebook as such, indicating that users might not need to log into the web-based service via their respective Facebook accounts.            

There is still no official word from WhatsApp regarding the matter, therefore all this is mere speculation so far. Therefore, even if WhatsApp developers are considering 'WhatsApp for web' as an option, chances are the client might not see the light of day at all.

It must be noted that rival messaging apps such as Viber, Telegram, WeChat, and Line do maintain full-fledged web and PC clients for each of their services, therefore, the concept is certainly not a new one, to say the least.

WhatsApp, meanwhile, has a larger user base of over 600 million active users. Therefore, if at all, WhatsApp brings along a web-client in the near future, the same will only help it increase its user base further.
