As kids, all of us must have been warned some time or the other not to
watch TV with all lights off. Well, the same logic applies to computer monitors too. While your eyes won't conk off if you work in a dark room, they will certainly be taking a lot of strain in the process.
Soundscience Halo 6 LED bias lighting kit from
Antec is a good solution to this age-old problem. The kit is a simple stick-on strip of LED bulbs that get their power from a USB port which can be plugged behind your CPU. Once you stick the strip behind your monitor, it won't take you long to see the difference.
While it is a very subjective thing, we thought the professional grade backlight actually made working long hours in a dark room much easier. It also accentuates colours on the screen, though we preferred to watch movies without this extra effect, more out of habit than anything else. The glow behind the monitor, though initially a bit of an irritation, will gradually become an addictive addition to your desktop.
The only drawback for us was the lack of an on/off switch on the device. For those of us who leave our PCs on throughout the night, there is no option but to pull the USB cable out if you have to catch some sleep in the same room. Still a good accessory to have for workaholics, especially since it is so affordable.
