Clubhouse, the audio-only chat-based app will roll out to Android users in Indian on May 21. Clubhouse on its Twitter handle noted that its Android rollout will continue through this week. Clubhouse specified that the invite-only chat platform will roll out to Android users in Japan, Brazil, and Russia on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, and for users in Nigeria and India on Friday morning, May 21, 2021, and for the rest of world throughout the week, and will be available worldwide by Friday afternoon.
Clubhouse started developing the Android app early this year and started to test the beta version externally this month.
Earlier this month, Clubhouse beta for Android started rolling out in the US. It noted that it would be followed by other English-speaking countries and eventually the rest of the world. In a town hall earlier this month, the startup said availability on Android has been the most requested product feature, TechCrunch reported.
Clubhouse took its pace with the platform and started on a single platform which expanded gradually through an invite model. Clubhouse had noted that it will continue with the waitlist and invite system, to ensure that each new community member can bring along a few close friends. Clubhouse had also noted that it will expand its language support, and add more accessibility features to iOS app in the coming months.
Clubhouse did not release its Android version for over a year after it did for iOS. It cited downsides for its early popularity which included the load its systems bore causing widespread server outages and notification failures and surpassing the limits of early discovery algorithms.
Recent reports also have noted that Clubhouse's beta Android app lacks features like the ability to follow a topic, in-app translations, localisation, ability to create or manage a club, link Twitter and Instagram profiles, payments, as well as the ability to change the profile name or username.
Clubhouse installs took a hit after the company faced moderation issues. Reports speculate that the Android release of the platform could attract more users and help the platform with decreasing downloads.
Meanwhile, other tech companies also started releasing their own versions of audio-only apps. Twitter introduced Spaces, Telegram rolled out voice calls for channels, Discord too launched their respective audio-only stage features. Reddit has plans to launch its audio-only platform, Reddit Talk. Facebook is also working on its suite audio products expected to launch in the coming months.
