It seems that layoffs are not ending anytime soon as we are still hearing about job cuts every month across the tech industry. Ericsson recently announced a fresh round of layoffs, impacting over 1,200 employees. Some reliable sources have also reported that companies like Dell, IBM and Apple have also fired hundreds of employees. Here is a quick look at the layoffs done in March 2024.
Dell recently laid off a lot of workers to save money. Reuters reported that Dell now has about 120,000 employees, down from 126,000 the year before. This means that as many as 6,000 employees have been laid off. The cited source claims that the company struggled with slow sales of its computers, leading to an 11 percent drop in revenue last quarter.
IBM has informed a bunch of employees about the impending job cuts, sources familiar with the matter told CNBC. The announcement was made internally by Jonathan Adashek, IBM's chief communications officer, during a meeting lasting approximately seven minutes. Employees who are in the company's Marketing and Communications divisions reportedly got impacted by the latest set of layoffs.
Due to decreased demand for its 5G equipment, Ericsson will lay off 1,200 employees in Sweden. This decision is part of Ericsson's larger cost-cutting plan aimed at improving efficiency in a tough market.
In a statement, the company cited the need for cost reductions due to expected challenges in the mobile networks market in 2024. Ericsson had already reduced its workforce by 8,500 employees globally last year to streamline operations and cut costs, as per reports. This is about 8 percent of its total staff. Now, it plans to let go of more than one thousand employees to adapt to market conditions.
Apple has reportedly ended its ambitious project to develop microLED technology for smartwatch displays, leading to the termination of several dozen employees across the US and Asia. According to Bloomberg's sources, the discontinuation of this internal initiative was driven by the considerable expenses and technical intricacies associated with the project.
Google reportedly reduced its workforce or it is still in the process of doing it, according to a report by Bloomberg that was published in March 2024. The layoffs impact a few members of its trust and safety team. Despite this, it has requested these employees to remain available over weekends to address issues linked to its flagship generative AI tool, Gemini. Less than 10 individuals from a team of approximately 250 will be impacted.
