Instagram is updating its web client to make it more visually appealing. Although its company chief Adam Mosseri confirmed earlier this year that updating Instagram for large-screen devices, such as iPads, isn't a priority, at least the platform is getting a refreshed design on PCs. It would also allow iPad users to get a better visual experience via the Safari browser (or Chrome). However, the new interface is rolling out in a staggered manner, meaning it's only available to random users in limited regions at this point.
As reported by The Verge, the new interface includes a panel on the left instead of the top right. The panel comprises existing tools such as DM (direct message), explore, create a new post, and notifications. Notably, the panel now includes icons plus text, making it easier for users to understand the exact functionalities. Users will still find the Stories panel at the top. Sadly, Instagram's web client still does not have a dedicated panel for users to view Reels - its answer to TikTok.
As per a screenshot, the new design looks relatively small and compact. The report, quoting a spokesperson, notes, "We are always working on ways to improve the Instagram.com web experience for people. We recently made updates to modernise Instagram.com, including improving the navigation, optimising the video experience, and introducing a more immersive way to DM".
However, the new interface does not resemble the app UI, where most of these options are scattered across top and bottom panels. Of course, the app also offers a host of editing tools and the ability to post stories.
Meanwhile, Instagram suffered a major outage this week, and many users complained that their accounts were mysteriously suspended. Despite clicking on the 'disagree with the decision', many users couldn't retrieve their accounts, which caused a big panic. The Meta-owned company later clarified that it was a bug that made Instagram accounts inaccessible for nearly two hours. Users in India and other countries faced this issue, though it is now mitigated.
