Tata Group is reportedly in talks with Apple supplier Wistron to establish an electronics manufacturing joint venture in India to manufacture iPhones locally. As per the latest report from Bloomberg, Tata is considering partnering with the Taiwanese supplier to make iPhones in India and reduce dependency on China as the primary manufacturer of iPhones globally.
Apple with the help of its suppliers already assembles select iPhone models in India including the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone SE, iPhone 11, and a few others in India. The company manufactures these iPhone models in partnership with three suppliers in India including Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron. The leading Indian conglomerate, the Tata Group, is now said to collaborate with Taiwanese giant Wistron to make iPhones in India.
Well, this is the first time Tata Group is exploring making smartphones locally. The company currently makes products including salt, cars, electric vehicles, and software in India. Meanwhile, Tata's subsidiary Infiniti Retail owns Croma, which is a leading retail chain of consumer electronics products in India.
While there are no official words on Tata Group and Wistron's collaboration, the company clearly aims to become the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones in India. If Tata starts manufacturing iPhones in India, it could enable the country to call more and more global tech companies to adopt the "make in India" strategy and also export products to other countries.
Now, if Tata Group at all collaborates with Wistron to make iPhones in India, it could start with the newly launched iPhone 14. Several reports in the last few months stated that Apple is looking for alternate manufacturing sites to reduce dependency on China. Additional reports also suggested that the tech giant is working with its Indian suppliers to make iPhone 14 in the country in the next 2-3 months, which is quite early when compared to last year or years earlier.
Apple just unveiled the iPhone 14 series in India with a starting price of Rs 79,900, which is the same as the iPhone 13 launch price. Pre-orders for iPhone 14 start in the evening (5:30pm) today.
