Recently over here at India Today Tech, we reviewed the OnePlus 10 Pro. While we found the phone to be a well-rounded package, one part of it particularly impressed us. This was the camera system in the phone. So much so that we titled the review "Best ever camera from OnePlus makes it an Android superstar". In other words, based on our experience of shooting photos and videos with the OnePlus 10 Pro, we feel that this phone has the best camera system ever in a OnePlus phone. Now that the review is, done, let's explore the technology and the feature set that powers the OnePlus 10 Pro camera system. Some of it is superfluous, but some of it is mighty impressive and useful.
Like it was the case with the previous OnePlus 9 Pro, the new OnePlus flagship too has a camera system where the company has worked with Hasselblad, an iconic camera brand. The OnePlus 10 Pro is powered by, what OnePlus calls, Hasselblad 2.0 system. And unlike the previous collaboration, this time we feel the results of it are indeed more substantial and meaningful for users. But about that in a while. First, let's deal with the mundane numbers and specifics.
-- There are four cameras in the OnePlus 10 Pro. On the front, the phone has a selfie shooter with a 32-megapixel IMX615 sensor made by Sony. This camera comes with EIS and, as is common for selfie shooters, fixed focus.
-- On the rear, the phone has a 48-megapixel shooter at the centre of the camera system. This camera uses a custom Sony IMX789 sensor which is a large sensor. This camera uses EIS and OIS both and has a 7-piece lens. By default, it captures 12-megapixel photos because it uses pixel-binning to combine 4 pixels into 1 superpixel, and that helps the OnePlus 10 Pro click detailed and brighter photos.
-- The phone comes with an 8-megapixel camera with a telephoto lens. And then there is another 50-megapixel camera with an ultra-wide-angle lens and Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor.
-- The OnePlus 10 Pro camera system has dual-LED flash and supports features like night mode. When it comes to video, the numbers are equally impressive. The 10 Pro can record 8K footage in 24FPS. More impressively, the 4K footage can be shot in up to 120FPS!
While the hardware and core feature set in the OnePlus 10 Pro camera is not exactly unique -- it matches what some other flagship phones offer -- we found in the review that the magic of this camera system lies in how OnePlus has used this hardware. The phone comes with several unique features, most of which are useful. These features are a result of the partnership that OnePlus has with Hasselblad.
Recently, ahead of the phone's formal unveiling here is how OnePlus CEO Pete Lau put it: "With the OnePlus 10 Pro, we have continued to develop our partnership with Hasselblad to deliver more breakthroughs in mobile photography. And that all starts with the OnePlus Billion Color Solution.... We truly believe the OnePlus 10 Pro's ultra-wide camera, along with its primary and telephoto cameras, delivers the most versatile photography experience ever on a OnePlus device."
Billion Colour Solution: Last year, in OnePlus 9 Pro, the company worked with Hasselblad to fine-tune colour science for the camera output. The result was that the OnePlus 9 Pro shot photos with rich and deep colours. However, sometimes the colours were too rich, giving them an artificial look. This was particularly an issue with "red". So, OnePlus and Hasselblad have fine-tuned it further in the OnePlus 10 Pro. And we feel that the results are spectacular. In low light or good light, the main camera in the OnePlus 10 Pro captures brilliant colours. See the photos embedded in this article to notice these colours.
10-bit colours, 12-bit raw shooting: The colour fidelity in photos shot with the OnePlus 10 Pro is also a result of the phone's ability to capture 10-bit colours. Usually, smartphone cameras capture 8-bit colours. With 10-bit shots, they capture the hues better. OnePlus says that "the 10 Pro captures images with a 25 per cent increase in DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and processes 64 times more colour than a traditional smartphone. Apart from capturing colours in 10-bit, the OnePlus 10 Pro also shoots photos in 12-bit RAW, which can help enterprising photographers extract more detail and dynamic light from photos with post-processing.
XPan and filters: Hasselblad is a big name in the camera world because of the colour science and framing features it has pioneered in its cameras. Xpan, which is a unique wide-angle framing, is one such feature. It earlier came with the OnePlus 9 Pro and now is available on the OnePlus 10 Pro. It's fun to
use. And so are the Filters, even if there are way too many of them, it opens the world of unique Hasselblad colours to the Pro 10 users.
Hasselblad Pro Mode: Essentially, this is a pro mode where users can tweak their aperture, shutter speed and ISO etc. But unlike similar modes in other phones, this one too has something extra. For example, the ability to tweak white balance in real-time is an incredibly useful feature.
150-degree view and fisheye mode: Finally, there is the unique ultra-wide-angle camera in the OnePlus 10 Pro. Although the feature is buried in "more" in the camera app, once you discover it chances are that you will use it again and again. The 150-degree view that it offers is total fun to use and the fisheye is unique.
Lots of features and specs talk. But what does it all mean in use? Well, if you see the photos embedded throughout this article (to see them in bigger size check out our full review), you will easily see that the OnePlus 10 Pro has one of the best camera systems of any phone available right now in the market. In particular, the main camera in the phone clicks absolutely sublime photos with a lot of details, good dynamic range and great colours. The two photos of fruits are great examples of this, and they were actually clicked in artificial (and somewhat lower light) in a grocery shop.
At the same time, the ultra-wide-angle camera is fun to shoot. In the hands of someone who understands how the unique perspective of wide-angle can be used, this makes the OnePlus 10 Pro a valuable and incredible tool. The selfie camera, though, could have been better. And the same can be said for the camera with the telephoto lens.
But beyond a few things here and a few there, the OnePlus 10 Pro camera system is excellent. More importantly, unlike an iPhone which is excellent in default settings, the OnePlus 10 Pro works wonders not only with default settings but also offers unparalleled flexibility and creative options to users who don't mind getting into manual mode.
