SUMMARY
  • OpenAI has announced that users can now use ChatGPT without needing an account.
  • Despite no account requirement, data shared with ChatGPT can still be used by OpenAI.
  • Without an account, users cannot save or share their chats

ChatGPT is used by millions of people across the world and has come a long way since its inception in 2022. The AI tool, which initially gained popularity for its human-like responses, is now a part of many users' daily lives. After more than a year of its introduction, OpenAI has now decided to make the tool available for all, even for those who don't have an account for using the AI chatbot. Until now, if you wanted to talk to ChatGPT, creating an account was mandatory. But this has changed and now you can easily use the AI tool without needing to worry about creating an account. However, there is a catch here as well.

No account needed for using ChatGPT

In a blog post, OpenAI announced that users no longer require an account for using ChatGPT. "It's core to our mission to make tools like ChatGPT broadly available so that people can experience the benefits of AI. More than 100 million people across 185 countries use ChatGPT weekly to learn something new, find creative inspiration, and get answers to their questions. Starting today, you can use ChatGPT instantly, without needing to sign-up," the company said.

The company also added that they will be rolling out this feature gradually and hope to make the AI tool "accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities."

It isn't clear which regions will first get to use ChatGPT without an account, so we advise you to keep checking if you can talk to the AI chatbot without having to sign up.

With that being said, OpenAI also added in its blog post that even if you don't create an account, whatever you share with ChatGPT can still be used by the company to train the AI tool. Of course if you opt out of this, the company says that your data won't be used.

"We may use what you provide to ChatGPT to improve our models for everyone. If you'd like, you can turn this off through your Settings - whether you create an account or not," the blog post said.

What are the restrictions?

So, what are the restrictions that we have been talking about if you use ChatGPT without an account?

First, your chats cannot be saved or shared if you talk to the AI tool without signing up. This means that your conversations would be wiped out after you close the ChatGPT website and there is no way for you to retrieve them. You also can't share your conversations.

In addition to this, features like voice conversations and custom instructions will only be for those with an account.

"There are many benefits to creating an account including the ability to save and review your chat history, share chats, and unlock additional features like voice conversations and custom instructions."

According to a TechCrunch report, those using ChatGPT without an account will also have "slightly more restrictive content policies." However, OpenAI doesn't elaborate much on these restrictive policies.
