  • Renders showcase a sleek, flat frame
  • Expect redesigned rear cameras with a periscope telephoto sensor

We are just at the beginning of 2024 and the leaks for the Google Pixel 9 are already here! The American tech giant is rumoured to launch its Pixel flagships in the second half of the year. So what's the big deal about them?

A lot actually. Like every year, there is a lot of anticipation surrounding the upcoming Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. Reason? Since these are the only smartphones that Google launches in the year, a lot rides on them, more so because people consider the Pixel phones not just the official Google Android phones but also the devices that are in direct comparison to the Apple iPhone.

Still, the question remains: What's the big deal about the leaked images aka renders of the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro? Before I talk of that, let's take a close look at what all has leaked.

MySmartPrice, in collaboration with OnLeaks, has released exclusive 5K renders and a 360-degree video, unveiling the design elements and dimensions of the Pixel 9 Pro. And from the design, it seems that Google is serious this time around and wants to give other flagship smartphones in the market a run for their money. Let's take a look at some of the rumoured leaks and specifications of the upcoming Google flagships and how they aim to redefine smartphone tech in 2024.

Flat displays are back

This seems to be the big news with the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9, at least from the renders. The whole phone is getting a makeover. The edges are flat, similar to what we are seeing on the iPhone for a while. And the screen is flat. Even the camera module now sits in a sharply cut square, although it does have a pill-shape.

You see, flat displays have been the preferred choice in high-end phones nowadays and the leaks suggest the Pixel 9 Pro will feature a circa 6.5-inch flat display, smaller than its predecessor. Notably, it will come with a centred punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera and thin bezels on all sides. One important bit to note here is that the bezels are uniform, something that we haven't seen on any other phones except iPhone and the Nothing phone so far.

The flat frame design incorporates the power and volume buttons on the right, leaving the left side clean. The bottom hosts the USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and SIM card tray.

Rumoured specifications

The Pixel 9 Pro is rumoured to come with a 162.7 x 76.6 x 8.5 mm, expanding to 12.0 mm with the camera bump. The top of the device houses the mmWave antenna cover and a microphone. As per the leaks, the rear camera module is set to receive a refreshed design, featuring a triple setup with a telephoto sensor alongside the standard wide camera. A periscope telephoto sensor and a large camera island suggest potential support for variable aperture.

While these details offer just a glimpse into the Pixel 9 Pro, specific features and additional information remain undisclosed, adding to the intrigue surrounding Google's upcoming flagship.

Undoubtedly, the company will look to push these flagship devices aggressively as the era of AI is upon us and Google is one of the pioneers when it comes to AI. While it's uncertain whether these flagships will be a hit with the audience, one can't doubt Google's commitment to getting its customers not only a clean Android experience but also a little extra AI to add that spark.
