For smartphones, cracking the DxOMark ranking can be extremely difficult. OnePlus has found this often. And so has Google, which makes the Pixels phones that are otherwise known for their photo prowess. This year Samsung is discovering the same. Although the company claims that its new Galaxy S24 Ultra comes packed with its most advanced camera system, the team managing DxOMark tests is not impressed. After putting the S24 Ultra through extensive tests, DxOMark gave the phone just 144 points, and position of 18th on the leaderboard.
While a score of 144 and an 18th position is nothing to laugh at, for a phone like the Galaxy S24 Ultra this is a rather disappointing score. This is because a score of 144 points puts it behind not just similarly priced iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has a score of 154 points, but also behind the likes of Google Pixel 8 and even last year's phones like the iPhone 14 Pro. Usually phones like the S24 Ultra — latest and greatest — are supposed to top the DxOMark list, and if not then at least finish on the podium.
Compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is priced similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Samsung phones scores lower in both photo and video departments. Its overall score, though, is particularly impacted due to the lower 137 points that it scores in video recording. In the same area, the iPhone 15 Pro Max scores 158 points.
But as we said, the score of 144 is not too shabby. And DxO Mark noted that as it said, "The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra camera didn't set any records, the latest flagship from Samsung is a very capable all-round device that provides a more than satisfactory performance for all types of photography in various kinds of scenarios."
DxOMark highlighted the camera performance of the S24 Ultra in its pros and cons section. Among the pros, the DXOMark team praised the S24 Ultra zoom performance, colour rendering in good light, details in good light, performance in portrait mode and its ability to expose the scene well. In cons, however, DxOMark noted loss of detail in low light, noise in low light scenes and in shadows, and white balance instabilities in both photos and videos.
Surprisingly, the DxOMark also highlighted that the S24 Ultra camera can get slow. There was, said DxOMark, "noticeable delay between pressing the shutter and capturing under various test conditions."
No 1 in Display
Along with the camera, DxOMark has also tested the display of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. And in display, the company ranked the phone absolute No 1. In display tests, the S24 Ultra scores 155 points, one point ahead of the existing leader Pixel 8 Pro.
"The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's screen performance earned the flagship device the overall top spot in our Display protocol ranking, thanks to the marked improvements in nearly all attributes, particularly over its predecessor the S23 Ultra," noted DxOMark.
