WhatsApp has been testing a lot of new features lately. The Facebook-owned messaging app has been long speculated to be working on multi-device support and now as per the latest reports, WhatsApp is working on a feature that would let users sync their chat history across platforms. The feature is currently being tested and will be rolled out officially for users once the testing phase is over.
As per Wabetanifo, the multi-device support that WhatsApp is currently working on will also support chat history sync. This means that once you are able to log into up to five devices using a single account you will also be able to sync your messages across devices.
The WhatsApp features tracker in its report stated that once the feature comes into play, users will no longer have to copy their chat history every time they log in to a different device using a single account. WhatsApp will automatically sync the chat history but it would require a working Wi-Fi connection as files could be large in size and hence can consume a lot of your mobile data.
"When WhatsApp has safely copied the chat history to the second device, it will be finally possible to use your account from it. Note that any message will be delivered to all your family devices, so your chat history will be always synced across platforms, and when you use or remove a device, your encryption key changes. When the encryption key changes, all active chats will be notified (if Security Notifications are enabled in WhatsApp Settings)," the report by Wabetainfo read.
The report also reveals that WhatsApp has exclusively created an app for iPad that will enable multi-device support. This would mean that users can log into their phones and iPad at the same time. The feature is still under development and WhatsApp is yet to make an official announcement. As of now, the multi-device support is not available for users. However, one can simultaneously log into the WhatsApp web using their existing account.
On a related note, WhatsApp today has rolled out the Messenger Rooms shortcut for the iOS app a week after making it available for WhatsApp web users. The new feature would let people video chat with around 50 people simply by creating a link. The link will let people join a call even without having a Facebook account.
