During the #BudgetRoundTable2024 conference, Sourav Majumdar, Editor of Business Today, engaged in an exclusive conversation with Dr. Surjit Bhalla, Economist and Former Executive Director of the IMF, and Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist at ICRA, to share their views on the fiscal fine print of India highlighted in the Budget 2024-25 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.On the Budget 2024, Dr. Surjit Bhalla praised the Indian economy's robust condition, highlighting the budget's alignment with the long-term vision of 2047, particularly in terms of fiscal deficit and tax ratio. He commended the budget for promoting growth and investment, deeming it broadly positive. Aditi Nayar echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the budget's strong fiscal discipline. She noted that the fiscal deficit is at the lower end of expectations, showcasing a judicious approach to capital expenditure. Nayar also highlighted the modest revenue expenditure and the strategic shift towards achieving the debt-to-GDP target, marking a forward-looking fiscal strategy. Both experts agreed that Budget 2024 effectively balances immediate economic needs with long-term fiscal goals.
