
Amid the reams of Budget data lies a seemingly innocuous number, Rs 56,574 crore.
It is under the head of non-plan expenditure. This is the amount that was kept aside as investment in International financial institutions for this fiscal year - of which finance minister P Chidambaram spent Rs 922.21 crore and has budgeted for Rs 3,258 in the next fiscal year.

The estimate of non-plan expenditure was revised to Rs 11,14,902 crore this fiscal year from the budgeted Rs 11,09,975 crore , a rise of Rs 4,927 crore.
