Jolted by the
worst-ever blackout, the government is mulling setting up separate electricity transmission islands for essential services like Railways and Airports, besides major cities to insulate them from any similar crisis in the future.
Power Secretary P Uma Shankar said, "Some of the areas would be insulated from these kind of
incidents, we are looking at that...they may be based on geography or services, we are looking into it."
"We are working on whether we can have separate kind of (transmission) islands which would be insulated from these kind of incidents," Shankar told reporters.
In the worst ever power crisis, over half of the country's
1.2 billion population in 21 states went without electricity for several hours yesterday as three major transmission grids failed, bringing northern, eastern and north-eastern regions to a grinding halt.
The failure came less than 24 hours after the Northern Grid on Monday collapsed and was later revived.
