Eying to tap the smaller cities in India, the Wyndham
Hotel Group, part of Wyndham Worldwide, on Monday announced that it will be opening seven hotels in India under the Ramada and Days Inn brands in the next four years.
The firm signed an agreement with realty developer Aerens Goldsouk International Ltd (AGIL) to develop four hotels under the Ramada brand in Chennai, Kochi, Ludhiana and Hissar.
The company is also in talks with AGIL to develop more such hotels in Karnal, Ambala, Jagadhari and Doraha.
The Wyndham group has also signed separate deals with Madhuban Group to open two other Ramada hotels in Dehradun and Mussoorie and another agreement with Mosaic Infraventures Private Ltd for developing the Days Inn brand of hotels in Raipur.
"No hospitality group in the world can ignore India. We have huge plans for India, especially for the smaller cities where we see maximum demand for hotel rooms," Ken Greene, president and managing director (Asia-Pacific), Wyndham Hotel Group told Mail Today. "In India there is a lot of gap between the demand and supply of hotel rooms but as most of the hotel rooms are coming up in the metros there is a lack of rooms in smaller cities. In the next coming years our focus will be these cities which require quality rooms," Green said.
The company already has 12 hotels that are operational and eight properties that are currently under development. It plans to increase its India portfolio. Last month, the group signed an agreement with hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal to set up 50 new hotels in Tier-II cities in India within five years as part of a major expansion into South Asia.
"Agra is not the only tourist place in India. There are lots of tourist spots in India like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Varanasi, but there is lack of quality hotels. The luxury hotel rooms are overpriced. So there is always demand of good quality but affordable rooms in these potential cities," Green said.
