All major markets, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Forex, Money, Bullion and Oilseeds markets, will remain closed on Thursday on account of 'Christmas'.
The benchmark Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Wednesday closed 297.85 points lower at 27,208.61. On similar lines, the broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) index Nifty also fell sharply by 92.90 points (or 1.12 per cent) to end below the 8,200-mark at 8,174.10.
Markets slupmed due to the emergence of selling pressure in the last hour of the day's trade.
Brokers also attributed the selling pressure rollover of positions, short as well as long, to the next series on the last day December contract in Futures and Options.
Meanwhile, the rupee depreciated for the second day in a row on Wednesday by 28 paise to close at 63.51 against the Greenback.
The markets will open on Friday as usual.
