Coal India (CIL) has closed the last financial year with a production of 435.84 million tonnes (MT), missing the annual production target of 447 MT for 2011-12.

The state-owned company had a production of 431.32 MT in 2010-11, registering a growth of just 1 per cent.

CIL, the largest coal miner in the world, said off-take of raw coal reached an all time high of 432.53 MT during the year 2011-12, surpassing previous highest figure of 424.50 MT achieved last year, representing a growth of 1.9 per cent.

"Coal production and off-take in March were the highest ever in a single month since inception," CIL CMD Zohra Chatterji said.

The Maharatna company had reported negative production growth of 19 per cent and 16.9 per cent in the months of August and September, 2011, due to unprecedented rains.

The coal major is now geared up to attain the production target of 464.1 MT for 2012-13, Chatterji added.
