DSLRs with 24-megapixel sensors no longer have the bragging rights for being the one with the
most powerful digital imaging capability. That right now solely rests with the Nikon D800, which sports a 36.3MP FX-format CMOS sensor.
What does that mean in real terms?
Well, to start with, you could click an image of a mountain, but print and frame just a tree in it. A sensor so large means, each an every part of the image can become a picture in its own right, that too without any noise or distortion.
"Minute detail, monumental images," as Nikon calls it.
But the
D800 is not just about still. If a camera with a 36MP sensor can also capture video, then movie quality HD videos become should be a canter for it.
So, the D800 includes inputs for stereo microphones and headphones as well as a peak audio meter display; all this making it an excellent HD video camera too. At a time when a lot of HD movies are being shot or HD-SLRs, the D800 could be in for some serious action with specs like these.
Then there is the improved 51-point AF system, which ensures that every pixel in the image is sharp and crisp, even in the dimmest of lights. The camera has a shutter speed range of between 1/8000 and 30 seconds; while the maximum ISO range of 6400 is expandable up to 25,600.
The Nikon D800, as well as the 16.2 mp D4 for professionals, was launched in India on Wednesday. The D800 will cost Rs 1,49,950 onwards while the D4 will be priced at Rs 3,24,950.
