Several states in
northern India were severely affected as failure of Northern Grid hit the power supply on Monday.
Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Himachal and Rajasthan are the affected stated."Yes there are problems with Northern Grid, we are trying to restore it", said SK Soonee, CEO of Power System Operating Co (PSOC). PSOC manages the Northern Power Grid.
Delhi metro services were also disrupted due to tripping of the power supply across northern India, however, services were resumed on all six lines by 8.45 am after almost three hours.
"Services in all the six lines became normal by 8.45 a.m. We are receiving hydel power from Bhutan on priority basis," a Delhi Metro official said. He added that Delhi Metro was amongst the emergency services, including the prime minister's residence and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), being provided power.
"We were unable to operate any of the lines for an hour from 6 am to 7 am due to tripping of power supply. At 7 am we restored 25 per cent of the trains on all the lines, and now all the trains are plying as usual," the official added.
Officials sources said while the exact reasons for the grid failure are being ascertained, over drawl of power by states could have led to the problem.
The restoration of the grid may take a few more hours even as the engineers are trying to restore it since early morning.
Power supply in some pockets is being restored and the first priority is for public services like hospitals and transport.
"We are hoping to restore the grid in the next one or two hours. We are giving essential loads for services like Railways, Metro and Hospitals," Chairman and Managing Director of Power Grid Corporation AM Nayak said.
India's largest power producer NTPC is working on restoring the electricity supply.
